In the be getting there was darkness and it didn't matter if there were dents or not because you couldn't see them. But then there was light and PDR techs began using 4 foot florescent bulbs on mobile stands which became the foundation for dent removal. Over the years we have become increasingly mobile and hauling a 4' light from dealership to dealership became more of a burden to the mobile tech. I'm not sure who was the first to begin using the mini lights but few of us have looked back as the improvements have been profound.

Mini Lights are battery operated florescent lights used to read dents on a panel. They use a 12V power source and can be plugged into the vehicle's cigarette lighter or a jump box for increased mobility. The bulbs are only 12 inches long and the whole unit is very lightweight and portable. Many companies listed on this site offer these lights in one form or the other however there are slight differences in the electrical hardware. l You may want to look for one that has a LED indicator to let you know that it has power once it is plugged in.

The cover itself is probably the most important feature of the tool. The covers that comes with the unit will cast the light in either a fog pattern or a line depending upon it's design. The plastic covers are interchangeable. Many more techs are working with the fog pattern because it acts like putting the dent under a magnifier. I personally use a line while working outdoors. With either pattern you will find it easier to maneuver the light into the proper reading position as the unit is held by a flexible lockline which attaches to the vehicle with a suction cup. I don't believe magnetic bases are made anymore but you are better off with the suction cup as you can attach it to glass as well as the painted surface. You may want to avoid placing the suction over a pin stripe or graphic as it may slowly release the pressure and cause the unit to fall.

These lights are very effective at reading dents on curved surfaces which can be difficult to work with a 4' fixture. Another tip on using mini lights, you can use a cloth steering wheel cover around the edges of the light to protect the paint of the vehicle if it falls onto it. Ultra dent has a light with a foam pad on it that also nice.
